1st Gibraltar Open Darts Tournament
a big success
| Despite
a worrying start, caused mainly by very long frontier queues, the
recent Kronenbourg 1664 Open Darts Tournament proved to be very successful.
With 160 entries, it was always going to be a tough competition to
win, and so it proved for all the local players. |

Sports Minister Clive Beltran |
Despite
some excellent individual games, the best we could manage was to reach
board finals – unfortunately there were to be no local heroes.
Of all
the local players, some sympathy must go to George Federico, who
went out in the second game despite hitting five 180’s.
|
| In
the end though, it was the visitors who took all the glory (and the
prizes), with eventual winner Mark Jones pulling out all the stops
to beat seventeen year old Kirk Shepherd in the semi-final 4-2, and
then defeat this year’s Torremolinos champion Andy Gudgeon by
the same margin. |

Without
a doubt this competition has given our players valuable experience
in top class darts, and we now hope to make this an annual event.
We have made a few mistakes, which we will put right, and we are sure
that next year’s competition will be even bigger and better. |
