THE KRONENBOURG 1664
‘GIBRALTAR OPEN 2007’
sponsored by
Kronenbourg 1664

In its 4th edition the recent Kronenbourg 1664 ‘Gibraltar Open’ managed to attract a wider range of players from around the globe, included in the mix where UK
players (England, Scotland, Ireland & Wales), Spanish (including Catalan players) and Dutch players.

In light that the Gibraltar Open itself is growing in its reputation as one of the competitions to offer more than others globally, it is fast becoming very attractive for darts players to travel to Gibraltar to reap the rewards.

The Gibraltar Open offers substantial prize monies, world ranking points and a place for both winners (ladies & men) into the Winmau World Masters.

Justin Broton

The Men’s singles title went to 4 times Electronic Darts World Champion, Carlos Rodriquez Sequera from Cataluña. A well deserved win and he achieved a
personal ambition of his; to be able to participate in the World Championships. Just before his final match he said the following “Where do I sign to trade the winners place & prize money if you can book my place right now for the World Masters”. This highlights the importance and the fantastic opportunity of the invite that winning the Gibraltar Open offers to overseas players and which we in Gibraltar sometimes take for granted.
The Ladies winner was Scottish International, Margaret Ferguson. She had a well-fought final against UK opponent Wendy Wanstall. The final went 3-3 until Margaret managed to outscore Wendy to take the title 4-3.

Our local contingency could not do better than last 8 (Dylan Duo) with close on his heals, Justin Broton, who fell at the last 16 hurdle to a Catalan player just losing 3-2.

The stage finals where rather quite impressive (those that left early missed out) with players hitting 180’s in all the games including legs of up to a 39 average per dart.

All in all it was a good competition with very few setbacks. Lots of top quality darts where thrown and we are hoping the event just continues to grow which is always a good thing for the progression of the sport of darts in Gibraltar.

As of writing this article, interest has already been shown from various other federations globally who will be making arrangements to attend next year! So the future is indeed looking bright for the Gibraltar Darts Association biggest event:

The Kronenbourg 1664
‘Gibraltar Open’

Special thanks must go to everyone involved as without them events of such magnitude are simply not possible. Starting with our sports Minister, Honorary Fabian Vinet (for his prompt involvement), our main sponsor: Kronenbourg 1664 (Saccone & Speed) for providing everything required and Gache Ltd for the lovely

trophies; the Gibraltar Sports Authority with whom it would just not have been possible; the St Joseph’s 1st School staff (before, during & after the event), the constant continued support from those GDA, friends & family members who without word help every time they are needed and of course the players themselves who make it the event it has so eloquently grown into.

Finally of course thank you to the committee itself for all their hard work.
