The GDA organisers were happy with the 86 entrants
this year however smaller in number from previous years but quality
is always better than quantity. Last week's BDO Torremolinos Open
suffered along with Tourism on the Costa by the unfavourable Sterling
/ Euro rates.
Much was expected from Gibraltar's young(ish) arrowsmith's - Dylan
Duo, Dyson Parody & Justin Broton - all of whom had done so
well along the coast. Dylan did well by reaching the semi's but
as a willing GDA member his efforts are more appreciated by those
who are with him all the time and fair play to the man for having
pushed so hard in this the most difficult of competitions when players
are also organisers.
Dylan, in spite of opening each leg with a 'ton' was guilty of
some poor scores and his game slipped away, enabling the catalan
to establish a three leg lead in the best of seven match. Dylan
did manage to take a leg, but his opponent Federico Pozo was particularly
good at 'finishing' games at first chance.
It was another catalan Jose Escudero who won the other semi., but
not before Stuart Foale had 'struck'. Like lightning, he hit 180!,
180! to stand looking at 141. He flashed in another treble 20, treble
19 then double 12 - for the magical 9 dart 501 - his first and the
first ever officially recorded on the Rock.
Two International female players from the UK contested the final,
Louise Carrol (Oxfordshire) and Lorraine Morris (UK) in a best of
7 straight legs. Louise who strung together several tons on a regular
basis raced to a 3-0 lead before closing out a 4-1 for the prize,
entry into the winmau ladies and prize money.
Federico Pozo v Jose Escudero, Federico took an early lead as Jose
faltered on the doubles and seemed to have it won but the taller
catalan surged back to level at 3 all. He then found himself just
double 14 from the 'Open' and he missed it with 6 darts!!! allowing
his opponent to come from a long way behind to 'close it out' in
his customary manner (just like he did against Dylan in the Semi's).
Thanks as always to the committee & Dylan's family for their
continued support, to the Gibraltar Government and our main sponsor
Kronenbourg 1664.
Well done to all the winners!
