STAN JAMES PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP
Saturday Event

John Part - Stan James Players Championship Winner

Part Wins Stan James Players Championship

JOHN PART continued his winning run with victory in Saturday's Stan James Players Championship in Gibraltar.

The Canadian returned to action for the first time since winning the Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship on New Year's Day with a quality display of consistency and class.

After staring defeat in the face against Mark Dudbridge in the last 16 - when the Bristolian missed six darts for victory - Part overcame Alex Roy and Andy Jenkins to reach the final and then see off Chris Mason 3-1.

He made his mark early, coming from behind to win the first set 2-1, although Mason hit straight back to take the second in the same manner.

Finishes of 143 and 87 from Part gave him the third and a 66 finish on double 18 put him a leg away from the win.

Mason took the next on double top to stay in the game, but Part landed double 16 at the first time of asking to seal victory.

Mason defeated Wayne Atwood, Darren Latham, Colin Osborne and Dave Askew to reach the quarter-finals, and landed five 180s and two crucial bull finishes in coming from two sets down against Steve Beaton in the last eight.

He swept past Alan Tabern in straight sets in the semis, but had no answer to Part's clinical accuracy on the doubles.

Number one seed James Wade was an early casualty, with Gary Mawson coming from two sets down and a leg down to knock out the Stan James World Matchplay and SkyBet World Grand Prix winner.

Dutch duo Jelle Klaasen and Michael van Gerwen were first round casualties, losing to Beaton and Tabern respectively.

Beaton's further wins over Bob Crawley, Chris Thompson and Jason Barry took him into his first quarter-final since last June.

Andy Jenkins edged out Kevin Painter in a final-leg epic in the quarter-finals, with the Portsmouth thrower having six perfect darts at one stage during the win.

James Wade - StanJames.com Players Championship Winner

StanJames.com Players Championship Glory For Wade

WORLD NUMBER THREE James Wade picked up his first title of 2008 with a 3-1 win over Denis Ovens in the final of the StanJames.com Players Championship in Gibraltar on Sunday.

The PDC Player of the Year won three non-televised tournaments in 2007, and bounced back in style from a first-game loss in Saturday's Players Championship to take the £5,000 winner's cheque 24 hours later.

He never looked in trouble after taking a 2-0 lead against Ovens in the final, and though he lost the third set without reply won the fourth 2-1, thanks in part to two maximums and a 177 score which left his opponent trailing.

Wade had sailed close to the wind in his semi-final against Mervyn King, who pushed him all the way after Alex Roy had earlier been dispatched in straight legs in the quarter-finals.

Ovens, the runner-up in last weekend's Blue Square UK Open North-East Regional Final, continued his good start to the year by seeing off McDine in another close semi-final.

McDine led the deciding set of their game before Ovens took out 121 on the bullseye to level and then 105 on double 16 for the win.

He had also been pushed all the way by John Ferrell in the last eight, and also overcame Steve Cusick, Dennis Smith, Andy Smith and Terry Jenkins.

King produced some superb form during his run to the last four, coming from 2-1 down against Jamie Caven in the last 32 and also becoming the first player for almost two months to defeat new World Champion John Part.

King also saw off Kevin Painter with a ten-darter in the final leg of their game, one of four he landed during the day.

Steve Beaton reached a second successive quarter-final, and was joined in the last eight by John Ferrell, who also made the last eight a week ago in Gateshead.
